The story behind the name

Why is a Vineyard/Winery in Euroa,
Victoria, Australia – named after a coastal
village in Cornwall, England?

Kate explains; as a young child I have memories of spending time with my grandparents, Gran Flo and Papa Ray on their small farm in Whittlesea. The property was called Penzance.

So I thought we could continue this legacy by naming our property Penzance. But after settling in Euroa, and starting to build the vineyard- there was a much greater connection.

My great-great grandparents, Philip and Jane Carne, had migrated from … Penzance, England to Australia in 1856. They settled in Fitzroy where my great grandfather Philip was born. He started his working life, moving to Donald to manage the Colonial Bank. He married Marianne, and my Gran-Flo was born. Philip and family, then moved to Euroa to manage the Colonial Bank. On Philip’s retirement they lived in Binney Street, Euroa in a house named … Penzance.

Crazy to think that we were attracted to Euroa solely due to the suitability of the property, but this connection existed.

Sometimes I think it’s more than circumstance!

Kate explains; as a young child I have memories of spending time with my Grandmother (Flo) and Papa Ray on their small farm in Whittlesea. The property was called Penzance.

So I thought we could continue this legacy by naming our property Penzance. But after settling in Euroa, and starting to build the vineyard- I discovered a much greater connection.

My Gran Flo met and Married Papa Ray (Harding) in Euroa. She was the first female bank teller (at the Colonial Bank of Euroa). Her Father (Philip Carne) was the bank manager. They lived in Binney St in a house called … Penzance.

This got me looking deeper into the origins of the name Penzance, and I discovered Gran Flo’s parents (Philip and Marienne Carne) had moved from Donald to manage the Colonial Bank. Philip left his parent’s home in Fitzroy to work as a bank teller, then to become the accountant at Donald. Philips parents (also called Philip, and Mary) had migrated from Penzance to Australia in 1856 settling in Fitzroy.

Crazy to think that we were attracted to Euroa solely due to the suitability of the property, but this connection existed.

Sometimes I think it’s more than circumstance!
