Penzance Vineyard and Winery was established as a “retirement”
plan by owners Stephen and Kate Pearson in 2021
Stephen Pearson
Stephen is a degree-qualified Microbiologist having had various management roles within Hospital Pathology and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing operations.
While not exactly an obvious background to venture into wine production, there has always been a long-term interest in wine. Stephen additionally studied viticulture and wine-making, and the couple’s holidays have always tended to include wine region locations.
Establishing a small quality-focused vineyard and winery has been a long-term ‘retirement’ plan. Penzance Vineyard and Winery is the realisation of this dream.
Kate Pearson
Kate was a nurse at Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, later nursing for many years mainly in aged care before moving into the education system.
Kate shares a similar passion to Steve in establishing Penzance, as Kate explains “we always seemed to holiday in various wine regions within Australia and when travelling Europe we always ended up in a vineyard or winery somewhere”.
There may also be a genetic link, Kate’s great great grandparents had a vineyard called The Acacias at Riggs Creek (also Strathbogie) in the late 1800s.
Retiring in 2023 and 2024 respectively, Stephen and Kate established Penzance Vineyard and Winery as their retirement life. Primarily to provide a purpose for their ‘third stage of life’, but also with a goal to create unique handcrafted wines, specifically produced to the style of wine that they themselves prefer.
Winemaking allows the couple to ‘get back to the land’. Years of travelling unlocked a passion for wine that extended far past sampling, and to the creation of Penzance Vineyard and Winery. Penzance is a small boutique vineyard where Steve and Kate’s ethos centres around family, lifestyle and simply enjoying good food and beautiful wine.
